I just switched my ING Direct savings to SmartyPig, which I heard about in the NY Times. It was easier to set up than ING was, and you get double the interest. Read the FAQs; they're perfectly clear on how you get your money if you need it. When you're setting up, you tell the program how much you want to save, for what, and by when, and it tells you how much you need to put in each month in order to achieve your goal. I had to fool around a little with the definition of my goal in order to get the monthly deposit I wanted to make, but that was the only even halfway tricky thing, and it was actually informative to see how much difference a little change could make. After a couple of months of no problems, I switched all the money at ING over yesterday. So far, so good.

Regarding bills via email.

CheckFree does not deliver bills via email. They send you an email link back to their website where you can view and pay your bills.

This might sound like small difference but actually it is key to the client experience. The most important difference is that you will have had to register at CheckFree to begin with.

Unfortunately, only a third of your bills are available there (at best), so you will have to receive most by paper in any event.

The best way to go 'paperless' is to arrange to pay your bills through your internet banking. The major banks have facilities where you can pay every bill in this manner.

This takes care of the payment part but sadly not the actual paper bill.

Here you have a few options:

a) Go to each of your billers and chose to turn off the paper bill. Most offer this now. They'll email you a link back to their website to see your bill.

b) Encourage your biller to use a company called Striata (www.striata.com) that can enable them to securely email you your bill. This is the most convenient option for you and you do not have to do anything to get your bill. (It arrives in your inbox as a secure PDF attachment to an email.) It is also clearly identified as a 'special' class of email so you don't miss them amongst all your other email.

They are also allowed through by all spam filters so you can be sure they won't get caught up there accidentally.

Email is the present & the future and bills will follow this communication channel of choice.

What I'm most concerned about is the ripple effect these bailouts and acquisitions are going to have on the rest of our economy. Personally, I don't think we've seen ANYTHING yet. It is highly likely that other financial institutions (as well as corporations from other industries) are in serious trouble, and it's just a matter of time before their numbers are revealed. The problem is that the Fed can't keep bailing everyone out. They're in debt up their eyeballs just like Corporate America... just like the majority of the American population.

Galia - quick! help! How are individuals supposed to get out of debt and make ends meet when our government is in the same boat? What's a realistic strategy? Is there such a thing as a "RESTART" button? ;)
